JUPITER CONTRACT

Two-person (or one, controlling both characters) co-operative asteroid mining simulator.

Fly your ship up to an asteroid, mine it, and repeat. Return to the depot when your cargo hold is full. However, keep an eye on your engines (which may need occasional repairs) and the needs of your crew (who may need to occasionally eat and/or sleep).

Controls

Player 1 - [W][S][A][D] to move, [Z][X][C] to interact
Player 2 - [arrow keys] to move, [,][.][/] (comma, period, and slash) to interact

Note: I ran up super hard against the jam deadline and didn't have time to work on any kind of gentle introduction or tutorial. Hopefully the manual below can help to clarify the mechanics.

MINING VESSEL OPERATIONS MANUAL

Space travel

The vessel is equipped with two fixed aft-facing main engines, maneuverable from the helm. Travel consists of four stages:

  1. Orient vessel towards target
  2. Burn until roughly halfway to target
  3. Re-orient vessel, pointing bow away from (and main engines towards) target
  4. Burn until full stop

The vessel is equipped with an auto-braking module capable of handling the latter two steps automatically. Engage with [X]/[.], and enjoy the conveniences of modern space travel.

Navigation

The navigational array is capable of locating rocky bodies up to 3 kilometers away. Use [Z] to lock or release a navigational target, which will update the readouts at the helm.

Mining

The vessel is equipped with a MK-04 mining module capable of extracting materials up to 150 meters away. From the mining control station, orient the laser towards any rocky body and engage with [Z]/[,].

When the vessel is at capacity, the navigational console will automatically target the nearest depot at which to deposit ores.

Engine maintenance

Engine failure is rare, but can occur. To mitigate, check the ship's systems display frequently. Many issues can be repaired before they become critical.

Amenities

The mining vessel is equipped with two suitable crew berths and a fully stocked galley, for long-range missions.

ABOUT

This game was made for Brackeys game jam 2021.1, is somewhat a follow-up to my previous game KUIPER SHIFT (though very different in theme), and is a prototype for a much larger game I have in my head. If you'd like to see this concept developed further, I'd love to hear from you.

Uses fonts: m3x6 by Daniel Linssen, and "3x4 dot font" by piano_no_renshu. The mining vessel is inspired by the tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain.
